2004 Summer Intensive Program for ages 9 through 19.

The Summer Intensive brings change, innovation and excitement to its participants. Lesley Tunstall, the Artistic Director is focused on bringing the finest faculty and dance program to students ages 9 and up.   Lesley Tunstall, founded the Academy in 2001. As director, Lesley is extremely involved in the Academy and committed to the development of its students.
The Dance Academy is housed in a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Hartsville, SC, an all American city. The building amenities include the largest dance studios in the Pee Dee, over 6,500 sq feet. There are administrative offices, costume shops , and a scene shop where all the back drops and props are built. A lounge area and dressing rooms are also part of the facilities.
Curriculum
During the summer, students will spend their days honing their ballet technique, learning classical variations and repertory and taking supplementary classes in modern, Fosse-based jazz , character, men’s class, injury and prevention, pilates, and yoga, Through the Academy's Choreographic Workshop, all students will explore the techniques and challenges of rehearsing and performing short pieces of original choreography. These pieces along with variations learned in the program will be perform in an 850 seat theater at the end of each Intensive. There will be over 30 hours of dance related classes a week.
Housing
There will be host families available for students ages 9 and up. Host families live in the immediate area. A fee will be required to cover the cost of food and lodging. There are also several hotels within walking distance of the studio. Details of these options will be available at the audition.
Tuition
Tuition for the 2005 Summer Intensive
June 6th through 18th is $595 for both weeks or $375.00 for one week.
Faculty
Lesley Tunstall, Artistic Director
Lesley trained at the Northern Ballet School in England. At the Paris Opera Ballet, she studied ballet with Gilbert Mayor and jazz with Matt Mattox. In New York, she studied ballet with Finis Jhung and David Howard. She was principal dancer with the Alterballetto Ballet Company in Italy, where she choreographed for the Aterforum Theatre Festival and for R.A.I. television. She has choreographed for The Oxford Road Show, BBC-TV and the Royal Exchange Scott Joplin Festival. She has danced in several Equity productions. She designs and builds costumes for all her work. For the past six years, Ms. Tunstall has directed and choreographed The Nutcracker. She is the artistic director of the Dance Academy of South Carolina. Her work has been seen at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, The International Theatre Festival in Amsterdam, the S.C. Theatre Festival, and the ACTF. As co-founder and director of Puck's Theatre, she has brought dance to at-risk youth. She is on the Approved Artist Roster for South Carolina. She is co-director of Memories of Children, which is currently touring throughout the state.
Pedro Szalay, Master Teacher
Pedro a native of La Guaira, Venezuela, trained at the National Ballet of Caracus and with Madame Darvish in NYC. He was a member of the National Ballet of Caracus before joining Richmond Ballet where he is now a Principal dancer. He is sought after for his innovative teaching technique and his artistry. Pedro has taught several master classes at the Dance Academy and is pleased to be apart of this years Intensive.
